Zephyr/Burned compared to The Fountain

Postby Dr Evil » Sat Oct 03, 2009 5:05 am

Zephyr/Burned is the best grunge ever made. The Bunnymen on testosterone.
The Fountain is the sound of impotence.

I heard "Never" on the radio yesterday and forgetting it was an Electrafixion song for 20 seonds became blissful that it was off the new album. It was a wonderful 20 seconds.

(That's what she said.)

Really? On the radio? Was it satellite or terrestrial? Either way, even when Electrafixion was around I don't think our local "alternative" FM station ever really played them and they were one of the biggest and respected stations for that type of music at that time (WOXY 97x).

Truth be told, I am not the biggest fan of Electrafixion. I've tried to get into it but it won't take. They have some songs I enjoy but all in all it seemed forced to me. I remember at the time thinking that their sound, that being the gigantic distorted guitar sound, is pretty close to what steered me toward bands like Echo and the Bunnymen in the first place.

 what radio station do you listen to? i've never heard electrafixion on the radio. haha.

i do like the efix album a lot, even though it doesn't sound like the bunnymen. as others have said before, it seems like mac and will were pushing all the limits as it was their first time back together after the break. i think there was a lot of enthusiasm there, and you can hear it in the music. it would be nice to get some of that energy back into the newer material.

Lowdown, Too Far Gone, Mirrorball (for the guitar solo especially), Mirrorball, Burned, Holy Grail and Land of the Dying Sun are great songs. Agree with Blinkilite, real enthusiasm and energy in there, but that style of music just wouldn't work any more. Mac really putting his all into the singing, even though his vocals had gone all croakey/nasally by then.

Funnily enough and referring to my recent posts about not seeing the band perform until 1997. I nearly went to see Electrafixion live in the mid-1990s, not knowing who they were or hearing the songs - as I was just going to any local gigs featuring guitar bands at that time. Was about to buy a ticket and found out they were grunge. Couldn't stand Nirvana, etc so gave it a miss. Bugger.

My favorite Efix songs are Timebomb and Lowdown. Too bad you missed them live. Ian cut his hair short, lost too much weight and took about 10 years off his looks. For the live shows, he looked way too cool in his leather jacket playing the guitar, while Will was somewhere on stage blasting away on his. Efix was short lived, but not to be forgotten.

When I got into the Bunnymen, a friend (not a Bunnymen fan) gave me a copy of the album and said it was really good. I bought the remastered double album a couple of years ago, so I realise that I missed something that I probably would have liked at the time, despite not liking other grunge bands.

Anytime I mention hearing anything by EATB on the terrestial radio other it is on the local college station.

With the excpetion of maybe Lips Like Sugar on oldies night.

And Electrafixion wa snot grunge. I don't care how inspired Mac was by Nirvana.

This is grunge. Hear the requisite out of tune vocals? And curddy sounding drum kit?

Good to know. I'll jot that down in your file. I keep many records. Here I am at recently VilliersTerrace Headquarters researching the catalog number for a Portuguese version of "Never".

Smart offices, but there are laws about employing animals, even if you have a take-it-easy approach to your employees. I took this from your 1st floor (accounts).

That's Betty. She's not really working out anyway. Last week she pooped on my expense report and I had to start all over.

After following the discussion on the subject of Electrafixion, I decided to pull out and listen to my copy of Burned for the very first time (I'm a newbie to the band). I agree completely with blinkilite: the level of energy has transformed their sound into something I enjoy. Not just one or two songs, it permeates the whole album. Kept me dancing in the cold evening air from beginning to end. I've got to now search for a few bootleg recordings of their live performances.

A bonus for those of you who may not have it:

Electrafixion Live Mix (1994-1996)

I agree with withahip and was going to post the same thing - Electrafixion is definitely not grunge. The song Burned is the closest they came to sounding like grunge, really good song, too.

Holy Grail is one of the best songs I've ever heard live by any band. Didn't like the full-length album except for a couple songs, liked more of the B-sides. Production and lyrics were both pretty mediocre, IMO.

If it isn't classed as "grunge". What can you call it? Alternative rock (which is too soft a definition)? Post-grunge? It didn't really fit in with what was coming through the British guitar scene, obviously until the later Electrafixion and then the Bunnymen reformation material. Seemed to be aimed at the US market.
