hooky vs mac

Just read Mick Middles' updated book about factory (though its as much about JD/NO as there's little about other bands - mentions of durrutti column throughout and a bit on the mondays at the end). Not sure how much is actually updated from the original mid-nineties version apart from a chapter at the end where he looks back, reassesses some of the stuff written originally, gets a bit teary eyed and then turns all Dr Cheese after going to see New Order in 2007. Anyways, towards the end hooky, talking about the revenge album, says:

We sold 88,000 in the States which was to my delight, more than Ian McCulloch who sold about 72,000 of his album. I was dead chuffed with that.

So I guess that's candleland?

There's no accounting for taste. Revenge was garbage.

Though it's shocking Candleland sold so little? That's a tiny number for the pre-digital era.

the solo album of a cult british band singer in the us. hardly surprising. the only dent they made in the us was with the grey album which did not give them time to create a following before spliting which would transcend to solo projects

I have thought exactly that too so total agreement here. Still 72K in an era where people were buying hard copies of music seems really low.

I remember talking to a classmate about Candleland. We had never discussed the Bunnymen but on that day, he was wearing one of their t-shirts and I asked him about Candleland. He was not at impressed--didn't like the drum machines and the synths. Probably encapsulated McCulloch's problem--he was working with a limited fanbase to begin with and then, many of them didn't follow him solo. I mentioned I was going to see the Candleland tour and he didn't have any interest. I remember the show being at a fairly small downtown theater. A long way from the Los Angeles outdoor venues and large amphitheaters the Bunnymen had once played.
