Return of the Mac: Ian McCulloch is back with Echo & The Funnymen

One of rock’s great mavericks, Ian McCulloch is also one of its greatest survivors. Hugely respected by fans and musicians alike, the frontman of Echo and the Bunnymen is responsible for some of the most enduring indie tunes ever made; records which have influenced generations of bands.

But McCulloch is no artefact; no dinosaur living off past glories. He remains a creative tour de force; a power to be reckoned with. So the fact, that more than four decades after his ground-breaking debut Crocodiles, they are still turning out finely-crafted albums with one in the pipeline.

The new album follows 2014's Meteorites; the new songs revealing a musician who has never lost his edge, striving to create something vital and exciting.

“These songs sound bold and fresh — and even modern, whatever that means!” he says.

The new album will be the band’s 13th, and finds the Cutter and Killing Moon singer, and Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant, back on top of their game, and brimming with verve, originality and lyrical honesty.

The record finds Ian in a happy place after what he admits was a period of artistic despondency. “I wasn’t happy with a lot of stuff,” he confesses. “Emotionally I was at a very low ebb.”

This from another article about new songs in the tour setlist.

Two years on from their last album Meteorites, McCulloch is still composing new masterpieces in his head every day.

“I’ve done lots of songs, written loads, and there’s a few that are pretty much finished - we’re going to be doing at least one of the new ones in our set,” he says about the band’s forthcoming Manchester show at the O2 Ritz on September 1.

Why have I got an image in my head of this:

Ian: Will, I've got this great new tune

Will: how does it go then Mac?

Ian: do do do da da do do da do do do do doo da da da da do

Will: think we've done that one

Ian: Which one was that?

Will: Erm (thinks hard) Crystal Days.

Mac: cool. (Walks off)

Will: (sigh of relief) that was even crapper than yesterday. Where does he get his ideas from?

Would love a new LP if Will is more involved than the last one

I love the Bunnymen. If I didn't I wouldn't have started this site. However I've given up hope on any new albums and then we all have this same conversation with little teasers that "this one will be epic". In 15 years we got Flowers, Siberia, The Fountain, Meteorites. They all seem to have a few good songs but overall, meh. They must think so too because I don't see songs from those albums in the current setlists. Why not just concentrate on putting out one really great song or two vs watering down the legacy even more?

Why bother at all, they make an album, no-one buys it and they don't play any of the songs live apart from a token effort with one or maybe two which then get dropped fairly quickly so what's the point really?

I'll have you know that the last album was the fastest selling Bunnymen album of the decade, 100 copies were sold in the first week alone.

A poll recently put McCulloch in 26th place in a list of greatest ever Scousers

lol. Not really a maverick though is he. Still way behind a horse. Good result for Julian Cope though,

It's a shame they're not putting more effort into the recording. But it seems Will has conceded all decision making to Mac, and that's disappointing. I know that they're getting on a bit, and they're using the band to pay the bills, but for crying out loud I wish they'd take a bit more pride in what they do.

Take Killing Joke: their last three albums have been acclaimed left right and centre, has gathered them new fans, allowed them to play bigger venues and they regularly stick 8 songs from the new album in the set.
