Production .....

Postby Dave Smith » Fri Mar 21, 2014 6:42 am

What is Going on in Youths head???Seems that every song has endless Mac overdubs repeating words, endless big sounding synths and more tracks to mix than the Polyphonic Spree dueting with the London symphony orchestra .Theres nowhere left for Will to play ....the Bunnymen at their best were four guys just playing ....think of the reverb and space on ocean rain....Jesus or is it trying to make weak songs more interesting??
Whatever it sounds compressed to fuck and liable to cause headaches

I haven't heard it in its entirety and it might be the quality of the MP3 streams, but I thought it sounded alright production wise - as far as streaming quality goes - although the vocal echo stuff on some of the choruses appear to be OTT, especially on Lovers On The Run (I think) which from that snippet reminds me similarly of the production of Sideways 8 on Siberia. The rest similar to Hugh Jones with Siberia but sometimes with OTT orchestral arrangements. Maybe overly loud, which a lot of recordings were like about five-six years ago - there were quite a few albums I binned at that time after first play because they were just unlistenable due to the way they had been recorded (see below).

I guess those that have listened to it fully might have a better view. Is it like someone is scratching their finger nails down a chalkboard due to being too loud and at the wrong pitch as to cause irritation to the human ear, like 40 minutes of a really bad bout of tinnitus? And where does Will actually feature much?

Yep GP...Will have to wait for the album.Interpols OLTA is unlistenable all the way through because of compression .Good to see current albums such as Arcade Fire and Wild Beasts going back to ligher compression and space ..

To be honest I'm in shock that the lines "is this a breakdown " "I don't think so" have made it into my favourite bands new album....surely someone should say "hey Mac that's shit"????

Editors' An End Has A Start was like that too. Awful racket in places - the guitars particularly. If that is the case, I will most likely stay clear of Meteorites.

Must be a different Youth from Killing Joke.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Since The Grey Lp the production has been pretty bad MOR, Meteorites is the same, 'stadium rock on a budget' sound. Not cool enough for the
indie snobs and too old for the charts. Why not fuck it, make it raw put loads of reverb on everything and go back to doing something with a bit of vitality. I'm sure they'd sell more than with the safe 'please like us' approach

Also, autotune, is it just me who think they heard it?
