It's not just 80s rose tinted glasses nostalgia. The Evergreen period was great, I loved WAYGTDWYL and Flowers showed some promise. After that I dunno, Mac's voice really tanked. Very hit and miss. Aside from the Ocean Rain shows they seem to be stuck in 2nd gear and going through Mac's motions. I keep waiting for that to change.

Nothing to do with any wish to be back in the 80s. It's just that present day bunnymen material doesn't compare with the stuff they did between 1979-1986.

Anyway, they've got a new album out soon which hopefully will prove me wrong.

one man's opinion

I read this here:

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2014/02/13/echo-bunnymen-new-album-tour/

The key for this band’s future–as anything other than an oldies act–is for Ian to embrace his wracked voice. Drink, drags, and mostly age–it happens. But look at Waits & Cohen–Ian needs to embrace the clown, not the soaring rock star. He ain’t 22.

He's only got himself to blame for the degradation of his voice, smoking on stage while you're singing may have looked cool but he's paying the price now the silly sod.

well i think you're both right. If he could embrace the tuneless rasp, write some words that weren't balls, embrace will's wilder side and will could stop mixing shiny sixties guitar licks with left-right superpanning farty noises we could be in. Oh, and stop sayng its the best thing since ocean rain. (1) there's not that much competition and (2) most people either couldn't give a stuff, (3)have never heard it or (4) are laughing at the deluded old fart who still thinks he's great.

I think he does a good job of that on Forgotten Fields where he is basically sing/talking through most of it and the song is pretty damn good, one of the better album tracks of the new band.

Just watched The Killing Moon video and became depressed for the first time.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts
