Talking about marketing the Bunnymen, anybody heard this Manic Shit Preachers song that Mac has sung on yet. Being a law abiding citizen who doesn't download illegal MP3s, I have tried to look for it or a sample but gave up. Wonder if it is any good, or just some god damn awful typical Manics-sounding song with Mac croaking his way through it.

not that one, no, but heard a different song on the radio last night - so not of much help - with both maconie & radcliffe going on about how good the album was, return to form and all that (oops, countdown to another one of them going awol or dying suddenly after a long illness), and that they are doing a live session next week. It did sound OK I'd say but wouldn't persuade any borderline fans to leap in feet first into the rushing waters of the manic street preachers very own tidal waterway. They are also giving a song away free on their website.

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than download that single; alternatively I'd download Proxy instead.... actually thinking about it, maybe the Manics' song might be better.

The Maniacs have their moments. I remember going on to my mates about how the Bunnymen were the best band in the world around the time of Evergreen, assuming they would release something great like I'll Fly Tonight or Too Young to Kneel as the single, rather than the pedestrian and over-sentimental Nothing Lasts Forever. When I found out that NLF was the single, my friends said "you say the Bunnymen are great-what, even better than the maniacs "you stole the sun from my heart?" and I replied "Er- well, um -they haven't released the best songs from the album" -cue a long list of increasingly bitter disappointments.

I bought their 'greatest hits' and find it mostly unlistenable apart from Faster.Im of that age who remember the Manics for the joke band they were at the start-crap Clash style rip-offs singing 'You Love Us' with no irony.I have it on good authority that Richey Manic never even had his guitar turned up because he couldnt play it.

Once went to the bar at Shepherds Bush Empire and stood next to a fat midget who I recognised from somewhere. It was James 'Dean' Bradfield looking more like James 'hod-carrier' Bradfield straight from the kebab shop.

I'll never like the Manics. In fact, they are probably my most hated band. I spent many a night in the Gonllachywachyglohllochmayllochypollochybollochy (wipes spit from computer screen) night club (or whatever it was called) and the local cinema in the 1990s when I was living in Wales hearing A Design for Life over, over and over and over again. That song is even going through my head at the moment with its awful sweeping orchestral arrangements and naff chorus. And then there was the constant interviews "oh Richey Edwards, he was such a loveable rogue and such an important member of the band, how we miss him, blah blah blah" quotes. Funny that, Richie Manic couldn't even play the guitar.

my ex had the 'if you tolerate this... / design for life' album, whatever it was called and the first four songs were OK, afterthat I had to swich off. I also bought, on a whim, 'the holy bible' from the tesco bargain bin for about three quid and that pretty mush defines the word unlistenable. Gave it to my mate and he gave it back. Having said that, saw em headline Reading a while back and they were pretty good, in the dont have to think about too hard after a long day drinking and wandering round a field listening to bands you've never geard of kind of way. The cross dressing bass player is always good for a gobby quote, and the song they wrote for shirley bassey was pretty good - but then it had shirley singing it and not the fat kebab bloke you mention.

I once worked in a bar and one of the patrons always asked for a Shirley Basey on ice
