An echo of what they once were

Postby bunnybunny » Wed Feb 10, 2010 1:06 am

Bet the guys regret their choice of moniker now. How many times have you heard the word "echo" used against them? Like this recent example...

But for the rest of us who loved the band at the height of their powers all those years ago, it felt like a dull echo of a distant era.

I swear to God their show would improve tenfold if someone would just get a fuckin guitar in Mac's hands. The man was meant to play.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Agreed...especially now. Though the Royal Albert Hall concert where he stuck to just singing and they hired Mooney to do his part came out damn well, but that was back in the day.

You forget that they originally toyed with calling themselves Smokie and the Has-Beens. From their point of view they dodged a bullet.

The drum machine, of course.

Well, it made record company execs laugh when they first heard it. Kind of like Vampire Weekend does today--only worse because you'd think their sense would have been dulled to unusual names by now, no?

Coldplay's version of Lips Like Sugar are good but definitely will not be as great as Echo and the Bunnymen's.

It could be alot worse. I felt really bad for the whole Gene Loves Jezebel issue. Apparently, the twin brothers were in a really big legal battle over being able to perform under the name of the band. Now they both can perform under the name, but one is Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel (UK based) and the other is Micheal Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel.

Seriously, EATB can fill much larger spaces. The really sad thing is that Jay Aston is still really good, but this legal battle has made it confusing for fans. Micheal Aston has been smoking and can't sing his stuff anymore. Jay Aston plays guitar and can still turn it out. I met Jay and spoke to him briefly this weekend. He was supernice. And just like EATB, they were better when they weren't overproduced. But hey, that's how things were in the 80s.

And Jezebel's getting serviced both ends?

I like where this is heading

Our boys could help overcome the "echo" impression if they'd just mix it up a little bit. It's getting really depressing to read reviews that mention the groovy mashup of Walk on the Wild Side, Don't Bring Me Down, etc., as though it's spontaneous when they've been doing the exact same thing for years.
