I bought the new Gaga cd. There is one song that sounds like it will last. The rest honestly sounds like dated early 90s European techno.

It really takes a long time for a sound to make it to terrestrial commercial radio in smaller U.S. markets. Or could it be she is retro to tweens but seems like she just missed the bus to us oldies?

The interesting thing is bands like Flaming Lips and Deerhunter cannot be seen as selling well or will become unpopular. This has gone on for ages.

An article I read in the paper in the 80s revealed local record stores number two seller of merchandise was Cure stuff. (I want to say number one merch sales was New Kids.) This despite the fact that the Cure had yet to have a major U.S. hit. The videos were being played for Head On The Door on 120 Minutes, but aside from that most kids were under the false impression they were the only ones listening. This was one of the greatest selling points of the band.

Bowie made strangeness par for the course. The difference is that Bowie had definable personas and periods with attached songs. Madonna has managed to make it work.

I get the impression that Gaga is business savvy and all that she does is very calculated. I hope she makes billions.

It's quite possible you are right. Pretending to exist on the borders of sanity can only help. Might have a sweet soul in there too, since she announced on Oprah she will donate all of the profits from one of her shows to Haiti. Society seems to have a love affair with musicians who support causes. (Bono)

Very savvy, with an even savvier manager, I bet.

She reminds me of Bowie a bit ... in the reinvention department.

Have to say I always look forward to her costuming choices on the awards shows.

How the hell did I leave them out??? And Modern Lovers and the VU and Iggy?

I think we've proven that American music can hold its head high.

Saw them live in a bar in Sag Harbor.

Hey Wojo, were you and Scouser once married? I bet the divorce lawyers made a fucking mint.

The Bunnymen trying to shed their 80s image is like the Stray Cats having a reunion tour and saying they aren't going to play rock-a-billy anymore.

hahahaha!! They were great.
Stray Cats--an American band that had to go to the UK to find an audience.
One of the boys owns a club on Sunset--the Cat Club. Bit of a dive and the music's ear splitting, but that's great for the Sunset Strip. ;)

I hear rockabilly is making a comeback.
