Grey Album/Self Titled

General discussion about the band, live shows, its recordings or bootlegs, etc. You can buy, sell or trade here. You can even post eBay links. If it's about the Bunnymen, it goes here.

Mr. Brian wrote:There are good songs on it, I just don't seek it out as much as the first four albums. The other day in fact a song came up on shuffle so I went ahead and played the whole thing and found myself enjoying it. It's been a very long time since I just listened to it all the way through.

I've not heard ALL of the songs I don't think. I never bought the Grey Album. If they still have the tracks, they ought to mix it right. It would be cool. Get rid of the trumpets and crap--though there is that one song where it actually fits and he starts speaking well-pronounced but grammatically poor Spanish. It's sort of a hoot.

From that period, I do enjoy Bedbugs and Ballyhoo and Rollercoaster (b-side) and just heard Lost and Found for the first tie the other day and it's haunting. If the keyboard were a piano or a harpsichord it would sound better. Will's solo is good on it. Lips and the Game are good songs. But yes, they sounded better live--as evidenced by this video--with Mac actually playing his pink tele. (I want one!!! I'm actually bidding on a red one on ebay.)

Would anybody be terribly upset if DivaDiana77 were to call me a liar in front of all you fine people?

No it's just that he is consistently called worse and he IS a liar so it's the modus operandi around here. He also likes to be degraded by women as a hobby.

Yeah but unlike Mr. Brian I don't have to pay for it.

I've sworn not to swear. Besides, degrading him would give him pleasure. I'd rather deny him that...oh wait, that feeds right back into the part about him enjoying that. Crap.

No.
I wouldn't take any notice. We know you're a stand-up forumite, BF.

Everything was overproduced back then--chiefly because recording technology advanced to the point where they COULD so they DID.

I bought the reissue. It was better and worse than I thought. There were some good things about the album:

Bedbugs and Ballyhoo with Ray Manzarek
Lost and Found

Other than that, it doesn't really sound completely like them. The balance is off in the volume of the instruments. They're in there somewhere, but hard to find. Whereas if you listen/watch the video I posted of the Game/Lips that's what they really would have sounded like. Much better, slightly raw and more aggressive.

from the Crystal Days set their real sound from that time I thought was on:
Over Your Shoulder
Rollercoaster (love it!!!)
Lover, I love You
Satisfaction
and the original version of New Direction
And on the reissue:
Jimmy Brown (which is how Dancing Horses would sound if it weren't for all the other stuff added--though I have to admit the slick version is a guilty pleasure)

You can tell these songs were dumped without much production work. Thank God!
